Wrinkle Treatments: What They Are, How They Work and What to Expect

If fine lines or expression wrinkles are starting to bother you, there are now more ways than ever to soften their appearance and help your skin look fresher, smoother and more rested. Modern wrinkle treatments can be subtle, carefully tailored and surprisingly effective, with the emphasis very much on helping you look like yourself, just a little more refreshed.

Here at Radiance Personified in Crewe, we regularly get new clients popping in to the clinic who are considering anti-wrinkle injections or other wrinkle treatments for the first time and want to learn a little bit more about what’s available. One of the most important things we explain to everyone who asks is that not every wrinkle should be treated in the same way. Some lines are caused mainly by repeated facial movement, while others are linked to changes in our skin quality, volume, collagen or simply part of the natural ageing process.

This is why a proper consultation, with fully trained consultants really matters. Because rather than simply looking at a line and agreeing with you that it needs to disappear, we look at how your face moves, the current condition of your skin and the final resulta you’re hoping to achieve.

If you’ve been researching anti wrinkle injections, wrinkle relaxing treatments or other options for facial lines, this guide explains how the different approaches work, what you can realistically expect and what you should consider before deciding whether treatment is right for you.

Wrinkle Treatments at a Glance

Here are the main things worth knowing before we start digging into the detail:

  • Different types of wrinkles respond to different treatments.
  • Expression lines are created partly by repeated movement of the muscles beneath the skin.
  • Some injection-based wrinkle treatments temporarily reduce activity in selected facial muscles.
  • Common areas of concern include forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.
  • Injectable prescription treatments require an appropriate consultation and assessment before treatment.
  • Results from temporary injectable treatments develop gradually rather than instantly.
  • The aim shouldn’t necessarily be to remove every line or stop all facial movement.
  • Skin treatments, fillers, laser treatments and other aesthetic procedures may sometimes be more appropriate depending on the type of wrinkle being treated.

The most important point we want to make, based on many years of experience, is that there isn’t one universal “best treatment for wrinkles”. It really depends on your face.

What Are Wrinkle Treatments?

Wrinkle treatments is a broad term covering a number of non-surgical procedures designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, deeper wrinkles and other visible signs of ageing.

These can include a variety of injection-based treatments such as dermal fillers, skin boosters, microneedling, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, HIFU and other treatments designed to improve skin texture, firmness or volume.

The reason there are so many options is simple: wrinkles aren’t all created in the same way.

A line that becomes visible when you frown is very different from a crease caused by a reduction of facial volume. Fine lines caused by changes in skin quality are different again.

It’s something we see frequently at our clinic in Crewe. In fact, clients will often point to a particular line and ask us what treatment we can offer to remove it. But for our team, the first thing we need to establish is precisely why that line is there in the first place.

Once we understand the cause, we find it’s possible to have a much more useful conversation about the availabe options.

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

When people search online for anti wrinkle injections, they’re generally looking for injectable treatments used to reduce the appearance of what are known as expression lines.

Some treatments use prescription-only medicines which temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles. Because these medicines are prescription-only, suitability must be assessed appropriately before a treatment can actually be prescribed.

These treatments are most commonly associated with lines caused by repeated facial expressions.

Think about how often you:

  • raise your eyebrows;
  • frown;
  • squint;
  • smile;
  • concentrate.

The muscles involved will make those exact same movements many thousands of times over the years.

Eventually, lines that originally appeared only when the face moved may become increasingly noticeable – even when the face is relaxed.

How Do Expression Lines Develop?

Younger skin tends to spring back into place very effectively.

But raise your eyebrows and horizontal lines will probably appear on the forehead of even the relatively young. Relax your face and they disappear again.

Over time, several things change.

Skin naturally loses some of its collagen, elastin and ability to retain moisture. Repeated movement continues, while sun exposure and lifestyle factors can also contribute to changes in the skin.

Eventually, some expression lines begin to remain visible when your face is at rest.

These are sometimes described as moving from dynamic lines, which appear mainly during movement, towards more static or established lines.

This distinction is useful because it helps explain why treatment results differ.

Reducing muscle movement may soften an expression line, but an established crease that has been present for many years may not disappear completely simply because the muscle beneath it moves less.

This is one reason we’re careful about promising completely line-free skin.

Sometimes softer is the realistic goal, and often it looks better too.

How Do Injection-Based Wrinkle Treatments Work?

Certain prescription-only injectable treatments work by temporarily interrupting communication between nerves and targeted muscles.

This reduces the strength of contraction in the selected muscle for a period of time.

If that muscle contributes to a particular expression line, reducing its movement can allow the overlying skin to appear smoother and the line to become less prominent.

The word “selected” is important.

Good treatment isn’t simply about stopping facial movement everywhere. Facial muscles work together, and your expressions are part of what makes your face look like your face.

When we’re assessing someone, we aren’t only looking at the wrinkles. We’re watching how the forehead, eyebrows, eyes and surrounding muscles move together.

That’s far more useful than treating everybody according to a standard diagram.

Which Areas Are Commonly Associated With Expression Lines?

Some areas of the face are particularly prone to wrinkles caused by repeated movement.

Forehead Lines

Horizontal forehead lines usually become more visible when you raise your eyebrows.

Some people naturally have much stronger forehead movement than others, which is why two people of the same age can have very different forehead lines.

The position of the eyebrows also matters. This is an area where understanding facial movement is particularly important rather than simply concentrating on the wrinkle itself.

Frown Lines

Vertical lines between the eyebrows are often referred to as frown lines.

They develop through repeated contraction of the muscles used when frowning or concentrating.

One comment we hear surprisingly often is: “People keep asking if I’m angry when I’m not.”

That illustrates something quite important. People aren’t necessarily looking to appear younger. Sometimes they simply feel that a particular expression line makes them look tired, cross or worried when that isn’t how they feel.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the lines that appear around the outer corners of the eyes, particularly when smiling or squinting.

They’re an entirely normal part of facial expression.

The objective with any aesthetic treatment shouldn’t automatically be to remove them completely. For many clients, softening more pronounced lines while retaining natural expression produces a far more balanced result.

What Do Natural-Looking Results Actually Mean?

“Natural-looking” has become one of those phrases every aesthetics website uses, so it’s worth explaining what we actually mean by it.

For us, it means that your face should still behave like your face.

You should still be able to smile.

You should still have expression.

Your features should remain balanced.

And ideally, somebody looking at you shouldn’t immediately be able to identify what you’ve had done.

One of the biggest concerns we hear from people considering wrinkle treatment for the first time is that they’ll look frozen.

Usually, what they’re actually asking for isn’t complete removal of every line. They want to look a little fresher, less tired or less tense.

That distinction makes a big difference to how we approach a consultation.

More treatment isn’t automatically better treatment.

What Happens at an Anti-Wrinkle Consultation?

A good consultation should involve considerably more than pointing at your forehead and choosing a number of areas from a price list.

At Radiance Personified in Crewe, we’ll start by asking what concerns you and what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll then assess your face both while it’s relaxed and while it’s moving.

You may be asked to raise your eyebrows, frown, smile or make other expressions. It lets us see which muscles are active and how different areas of your face interact.

We’ll also discuss relevant medical history, previous aesthetic treatments and anything else that could affect suitability.

The consultation should also give you the chance to ask questions.

If we don’t think a particular treatment is suitable, or we believe another approach would make more sense, we’ll explain why.

Sometimes the most useful advice we can give somebody is not to have the treatment they originally came in asking about.

What Happens During Treatment?

The exact procedure varies depending on the treatment recommended.

Where an injectable treatment has been prescribed and approved as suitable, the practitioner will identify the relevant treatment areas before administering a number of small injections.

Clients naturally vary in how they experience injections, but the actual injection process is generally brief.

You may notice small raised areas, redness, tenderness or occasional bruising around injection sites afterwards. These usually settle.

Your practitioner should explain what to expect beforehand and provide appropriate aftercare instructions following treatment.

Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Hurt?

It’s impossible to promise that any treatment involving a needle is completely painless.

Most people experience the injections as brief pinches or stings rather than prolonged discomfort.

Interestingly, people who arrive feeling nervous often tell us afterwards that the procedure itself was much less dramatic than they’d imagined.

The consultation usually takes considerably longer than the injections.

When Do Results Begin to Appear?

Injection-based prescription wrinkle treatments don’t produce their final effect immediately.

The change develops progressively as the targeted muscles respond.

Initial effects may begin to become noticeable within the first few days, but it can take around two weeks or longer for the result to become properly established.

This is why judging the treatment the following morning is largely pointless.

Bodies, rather inconsiderately, refuse to operate according to Instagram schedules.

We prefer clients to understand from the outset that the result develops rather than suddenly appearing.

How Long Do Anti-Wrinkle Injection Results Last?

The effects of temporary muscle-reducing injectable treatments commonly last for several months.

Around three to four months is frequently quoted as a typical duration, although results vary considerably between individuals and some effects may last shorter or longer.

Factors can include:

  • the individual;
  • strength of the muscles being treated;
  • treatment area;
  • treatment plan;
  • previous treatment history;
  • the way that particular person responds.

As the effect wears off, muscle movement gradually returns.

It isn’t normally a case of waking up one morning and discovering that somebody has returned your forehead overnight.

What Happens If You Stop Having Treatment?

Nothing suddenly becomes worse simply because a temporary treatment wears off.

As its effects fade, activity gradually returns to the treated muscles and expression lines may begin to look more like they did before treatment.

You aren’t committed to continuing treatment indefinitely.

This is something worth saying because aesthetic treatments should always be an individual choice rather than something people feel trapped into maintaining.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Permanent?

No.

The muscle-reducing effects of the prescription medicines commonly associated with anti wrinkle injections are temporary.

Communication between the nerves and muscles gradually recovers and movement returns.

For some clients, the temporary nature of treatment is actually reassuring. It allows changes to be subtle and reviewed over time rather than committing to permanent alteration of the face.

Are Wrinkle Treatments Safe?

No cosmetic procedure is completely risk-free.

Possible reactions to injectable treatments can include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and headache. Other complications are possible and depend on the medicine, treatment area and individual.

This is another reason why we don’t like presenting aesthetic injections as something casual.

They may be quick treatments, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated casually.

Prescription medicines require appropriate prescribing, appropriate administration and a clear understanding of possible risks.

Very rare but potentially serious complications can occur with some prescription injectable treatments, which is why you should understand what symptoms require medical attention and how to contact your practitioner after treatment.

All relevant risks should be discussed during your consultation rather than hidden somewhere in microscopic small print.

Who Is Suitable for Wrinkle Treatment?

There isn’t a particular birthday when somebody suddenly becomes “the right age” for wrinkle treatment.

Age alone is a fairly poor way of deciding whether any aesthetic procedure is appropriate.

Two people can be the same age and have completely different:

  • facial movement;
  • skin quality;
  • sun exposure;
  • facial structure;
  • expression lines;
  • expectations.

Suitability depends on the individual, the concern being treated and the proposed treatment.

For prescription-only options, this also includes a proper medical assessment.

Who Might Not Be Suitable?

There are circumstances where a particular injectable treatment may not be appropriate.

Certain medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, breastfeeding or previous reactions may affect suitability depending on the proposed treatment.

That’s why articles like this are useful for understanding the basics but can’t tell you whether you personally should have a prescription treatment.

That decision needs to be made properly following consultation.

And if there’s something important in your medical history, tell your practitioner. We’re much more interested in keeping you safe than being impressed by your ability to complete a medical form quickly.

Before Having a Wrinkle Treatment

Your practitioner should provide advice appropriate to the exact treatment being considered.

More generally, use the consultation to make sure you understand:

  • what treatment is being proposed;
  • what you’re realistically likely to achieve;
  • how long the effect may last;
  • possible side effects and complications;
  • what aftercare will be required;
  • who is prescribing where prescription medicine is involved;
  • who will actually carry out the treatment;
  • who to contact if you’re concerned afterwards.

You should also feel comfortable saying no.

A consultation isn’t an obligation to proceed.

Wrinkle Treatment Aftercare

Aftercare depends on the treatment you’ve received, so follow the individual instructions given by your practitioner rather than random advice discovered in a three-year-old TikTok video.

Where injections are involved, temporary redness, small raised areas or bruising may occur.

Your practitioner should explain any activities you need to avoid, when you can return to your normal routine and what symptoms would warrant contacting the clinic or seeking medical advice.

If something doesn’t feel right afterwards, ask.

We’d much rather somebody contact us with a question than spend two days worrying because they were afraid of bothering us.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers Aren’t the Same Thing

These two treatments are often grouped together because they’re both injectable aesthetic procedures, but they work in fundamentally different ways.

Anti-Wrinkle Injectable Treatments Dermal Fillers
May reduce activity in selected facial muscles Add or restore volume
Often considered for expression lines Often considered for folds, contours or volume loss
Results develop gradually Some effects may be immediately visible
Effects are temporary Effects are also generally temporary
Require treatment-specific assessment Require treatment-specific assessment

This distinction matters.

If a line is primarily caused by repeated muscle movement, adding volume may not address its main cause.

Likewise, if a concern is caused mainly by loss of facial volume, reducing muscle movement may not be the most appropriate approach.

Sometimes treatments can form part of a wider aesthetic plan, but that decision needs to be based on the individual.

What About Other Treatments for Wrinkles?

Injections aren’t the only option.

At Radiance Personified we offer a range of aesthetic and skin treatments in Crewe, and depending on the cause of the concern, an entirely different treatment may be more appropriate.

For example, options may include:

CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

CO2 laser treatments are used to target skin texture and stimulate skin renewal. They may be considered where fine lines sit alongside concerns such as uneven texture, sun damage or scarring.

Microneedling

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural repair response. It’s commonly used to improve overall skin texture and the appearance of fine lines.

HIFU

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a non-surgical treatment designed to target deeper layers of tissue and is commonly considered where skin laxity and firmness are concerns.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers may be more appropriate where lines or folds are influenced by volume loss rather than repeated muscular movement.

Skin Boosters and Other Skin Treatments

Where the primary issue is skin quality, hydration or texture, a skin-focused approach may make more sense than trying to alter facial movement.

This is another reason we prefer consultations to shopping lists.

Tell us what bothers you and let us discuss the possible ways of treating it rather than deciding you need a particular procedure because somebody on Instagram had one.

How Should You Choose an Anti-Wrinkle Practitioner?

If you’re considering any injectable aesthetic treatment, don’t base your decision entirely on price or social media photographs.

Ask sensible questions.

Who is carrying out the procedure?

What training and experience do they have?

If prescription medicine is being considered, who will assess and prescribe it?

What are the risks?

What happens if you’re unhappy with the result?

What aftercare is available?

Who do you contact if something goes wrong?

A reputable practitioner should be comfortable answering those questions.

In our experience, a good consultation often leaves someone with more understanding and fewer assumptions than when they walked through the door.

That’s exactly what it should do.

Wrinkle Treatments in Crewe at Radiance Personified

At Radiance Personified, we’ve spent years working with clients who want to improve particular aspects of their appearance without looking dramatically different.

Our approach to wrinkle treatment in Crewe starts with understanding the person rather than simply treating the line.

We’ll assess your facial movement, listen to what concerns you and explain which options may be appropriate.

Sometimes that may involve discussing an injectable treatment. In other cases, we may recommend a skin treatment, filler, resurfacing procedure or simply advise that the change you’re asking for isn’t something we’d recommend treating.

We’d rather give you an honest answer than sell you the wrong procedure.

Considering Treatment for Fine Lines or Wrinkles?

If you’re bothered by forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet or other facial wrinkles, start by finding out what’s causing them.

Once you understand that, choosing the right treatment becomes much easier.

At Radiance Personified in Crewe, consultations give us the opportunity to assess your skin and facial movement, talk through the available options and explain what you can realistically expect.

There’s no requirement to arrive knowing which treatment you need.

That’s our job to help you work out.
