A clear, Honest Guide to the Treatment, Results, Recovery & Aftercare
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is one of the most advanced treatments we offer at Radiance Personified. We find it delivers great results for acne scarring, lines, wrinkles, sun damage and uneven skin texture because it encourages the skin to repair and renew itself.
However, it’s worth remembering that it’s also a more intensive treatment than regular facials, peels or light resurfacing procedures. Understandably, for that reason, many of our clients have questions before deciding whether it’s the right treatment for them.
In this post, we’ll try and explain how CO2 laser resurfacing works, what happens during treatment and what you’ll need to consider before booking. We’ll also talk honestly about downtime, aftercare, potential risks and the results you can realistically expect.

What Is CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing uses carefully controlled laser energy to remove or disrupt damaged skin cells. This triggers a natural healing response and stimulates renewed collagen activity within the treated area.
As your skin repairs itself, it may begin to look smoother, firmer and more even. Improvements continue to develop after the initial surface healing has taken place.
This is what makes CO2 laser different from treatments that mainly cleanse, hydrate or brighten the skin. It works at a deeper level and can address concerns that are difficult to improve through skincare or lighter treatments alone.
That doesn’t mean a stronger treatment is automatically a better treatment. When we assess your skin, we’ll consider whether CO2 laser is appropriate or whether you’d be better suited to another option.
A Very Short History of CO2 Laser Treatment
The first CO2 laser was developed by engineer Kumar Patel at Bell Laboratories in the United States in 1964. Early medical CO2 lasers were primarily used to cut or remove tissue with great precision.
The technology developed considerably during the 1990s with the introduction of high-energy pulsed systems. These allowed shallower, more controlled skin treatments with less thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. Fractional technology later made it possible to treat microscopic columns of skin while leaving surrounding areas untreated to support healing.
Modern CO2 skin resurfacing is the result of more than 60 years of scientific and medical development. While the equipment has become considerably more sophisticated, practitioner training, careful skin assessment and responsible aftercare remain essential.

What Can CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Help Improve?
We use CO2 laser resurfacing to address several different skin concerns. However, the likely improvement will depend on your skin, the treatment area and the nature and depth of the concern.
Acne Scarring and Uneven Skin Texture
Acne can leave pitted areas, depressions and changes in skin texture that remain long after active breakouts have settled.
Creams, facials and professional skincare can help support the general health and appearance of your skin, but they can’t always significantly change deeper textural scarring. CO2 laser works more deeply, helping to stimulate the skin’s natural repair process and encourage collagen renewal where the skin’s structure has been affected.
When we treat acne scarring, our aim is usually to soften the appearance of scars and make the overall texture look smoother and more refined.
We’ll never promise to remove every scar completely. The type, depth and extent of your scarring will influence what we can realistically achieve, and some clients may benefit from a course of treatments.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Ageing, facial movement and sun exposure can all contribute to lines around the eyes, mouth and other areas of the face.
CO2 laser may help soften suitable lines by resurfacing damaged skin and stimulating collagen renewal. It can also be used on areas such as the neck, décolletage and hands, where signs of ageing and sun exposure often become noticeable.
The treatment can improve skin quality, but it won’t stop facial movement or prevent your skin from continuing to age naturally.
Enlarged Pores and Rough Skin
Pores can appear more prominent when the surrounding skin becomes uneven, oily, damaged or less firm.
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing may help create a smoother and more consistent skin surface, making pores look less noticeable. It won’t remove pores because they’re a normal and necessary part of your skin.
Sun Damage and Uneven Tone
The face, neck, chest and hands often receive much more sun exposure than people realise. Over time, this can contribute to roughness, lines, uneven colour and areas of pigmentation.
CO2 laser may improve certain forms of visible sun damage. However, we’ll always assess pigmented marks carefully before treatment. Anything new, changing or unexplained may need to be checked by an appropriate medical professional before we proceed.
Stretch Marks and Selected Body Areas
CO2 laser treatment isn’t restricted to the face. Depending on your individual concern, we may be able to treat selected areas of the stomach, thighs, underarms, hands or elsewhere on the body.
Stretch marks and textural changes vary considerably in age, colour and depth. We’ll examine the area and explain what degree of improvement may be achievable before recommending treatment.
Who Is Suitable for CO2 Laser Treatment?
CO2 laser may be suitable if you’re looking for a more intensive way to improve scarring, lines, sun damage or uneven texture.
However, we can’t decide suitability based only on the concern you want treated. During your consultation, we’ll also consider:
- Your natural skin type and tone
- The present condition of your skin
- Any active acne, inflammation or infection
- Your medical history
- Medication and supplements
- Previous laser or cosmetic procedures
- Recent tanning or significant sun exposure
- Your history of cold sores
- Whether you’re prone to pigmentation changes or raised scarring
- Your ability to follow the necessary aftercare
- What you expect the treatment to achieve
CO2 laser isn’t suitable for every person or every skin condition. If we believe the risks outweigh the likely benefits, we’ll tell you.
What Happens at Your Consultation?
Your consultation isn’t simply a formality before treatment. It’s one of the most important stages of the process.
When you visit us at Radiance Personified, we’ll examine your skin and ask what you’d like to improve. We’ll discuss your medical history, previous treatments, medication and anything else that could affect your suitability or recovery.
We’ll then explain what CO2 laser may realistically achieve for your particular concern. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and won’t be pressured into making an immediate decision.
Before proceeding, we’ll make sure you understand:
- Why we’ve recommended CO2 laser
- Which areas we propose to treat
- What improvement may be realistic
- What the treatment may feel like
- The possible side effects and complications
- What your skin may look like while healing
- How much downtime you should plan for
- What preparation and aftercare you’ll need
- Whether we recommend one session or a course
- How to contact us if you’re worried afterwards
If we don’t believe CO2 laser is right for you, we’ll explain why and discuss other options where appropriate.
How Should You Prepare for CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
We’ll give you preparation instructions based on your skin, medical history and planned treatment. You should always follow this personal advice instead of relying on general instructions found online.
You may need to avoid tanning and unnecessary sun exposure beforehand. Recently tanned or sunburnt skin can increase the risk of burns, delayed healing and unwanted pigmentation changes.
You’ll also need to tell us about any medication, supplements and active skincare products you’re using. Don’t stop prescribed medication unless you’ve been advised to do so by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
We’ll need to know about previous cold sores, skin infections, reactions to cosmetic treatments and any history of unusual scarring.
You should also plan your appointment around the expected downtime. CO2 laser isn’t something we’d recommend squeezing in immediately before a wedding, holiday or major event and hoping a generous layer of concealer will sort everything out.
What Happens During the Treatment?
Your appointment will begin with cleansing and preparing the treatment area. Depending on your agreed treatment plan, we may also use appropriate measures to make the procedure more comfortable.
We’ll apply the laser carefully across the selected area using settings chosen for your skin, concern and desired treatment depth. You may experience heat, prickling or stinging, with some areas feeling more sensitive than others.
Following treatment, your skin is likely to appear red and feel warm or tender. We’ll explain what you should expect during the first few days, which products you can use and what you’ll need to avoid.
We’ll also give you clear aftercare instructions before you leave. If there’s anything you’re unsure about, please ask. We’d much rather explain something twice than have you go home and consult a random TikTok expert.
CO2 Laser Recovery: What Should You Expect?
Recovery differs from one person to another. It’ll depend on the size and location of the area, the intensity of the treatment and how your skin heals.
Immediately After Treatment
The treated skin may look red and feel warm, swollen, tender or sensitive. Some clients describe the initial sensation as similar to sunburn.
Your skin will be vulnerable during this stage, so you’ll need to avoid rubbing, scratching or applying products we haven’t recommended.
During the First Few Days
Redness, sensitivity, swelling, dryness, crusting or flaking can occur as your skin begins to heal. These changes may be more visible than you expect, which is why we’ll have an honest conversation about downtime before you book.
You’ll need to follow our cleansing and skincare instructions carefully. Don’t pick or pull at peeling or crusted skin because this can interfere with healing and increase the likelihood of infection, pigmentation changes or scarring.
As Your Skin Heals
The surface of your skin will gradually recover, although some redness or colour change may remain after the initial healing stage.
You shouldn’t reintroduce make-up, active skincare or your normal products until we’ve advised that it’s safe. Sun protection will also be particularly important because newly treated skin can be more sensitive to ultraviolet exposure.
Over the Following Weeks and Months
The results of CO2 laser treatment aren’t limited to what you see as soon as the surface has healed. Improvements connected with collagen renewal can continue developing during the following weeks and months.
We may arrange a review to assess your recovery and discuss whether any further treatment would be appropriate.
If you’re concerned at any point or your skin appears to be healing differently from what we explained, contact us. Aftercare support is part of the treatment, not an optional extra.
When Will You See Results?
You may begin to notice smoother or fresher-looking skin once the initial healing period has passed. Further changes can appear gradually as collagen renewal and skin repair continue.
There isn’t one result or timescale that applies to everyone. Your age, skin condition, concern, treatment intensity, lifestyle and aftercare can all influence the outcome.
Deeper acne scarring and more established textural concerns may require several sessions. During your consultation, we’ll explain whether we believe one treatment could be sufficient or whether you’re more likely to benefit from a course.
Results can be long-lasting, but CO2 laser can’t stop future ageing, sun exposure or new skin concerns. Appropriate skincare and regular sun protection can help you maintain the improvements achieved.
What Are the Possible Side Effects and Risks?
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is an advanced procedure, so we’ll never describe it as completely risk-free.
Expected short-term reactions can include redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, dryness, peeling and changes in skin texture during healing.
Less common complications can include infection, prolonged redness, delayed healing, cold-sore reactivation, acne or milia flare-ups, scarring and areas becoming lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.
Your individual risks will depend on your skin type, medical history, treatment area, treatment intensity and how carefully you follow the aftercare instructions.
We’ll discuss these possibilities before asking you to consent to treatment. You’ll also know who to contact if you’re worried during your recovery.
What Should You Ask Before Choosing a CO2 Laser Clinic?
Who performs your treatment matters every bit as much as the machine being used.
Before choosing a clinic, we’d recommend asking:
- What CO2 laser training has the practitioner completed?
- How will my skin and medical suitability be assessed?
- What results are realistic for my particular concern?
- What are the risks for my skin type?
- How might my skin look during recovery?
- How much downtime should I personally allow?
- What preparation will I need?
- What aftercare support is included?
- Who can I contact if I’m worried after treatment?
- Can I see genuine before-and-after photographs?
Be wary of anyone who guarantees completely scar-free, wrinkle-free or flawless skin. Your skin is a living organ, not a kitchen worktop waiting for a quick sand and polish.
Why Choose Radiance Personified in Crewe?
At Radiance Personified, your CO2 laser treatment will always begin with a personal consultation.
Our trained and experienced practitioners will assess your skin, listen to your concerns and create a treatment plan based on your individual suitability. We’ll explain what the procedure involves, what it may achieve and what you’ll need to expect during recovery.
We believe responsible treatment means discussing limitations and risks just as clearly as potential benefits. You’ll receive honest advice, proper preparation guidance and continued support after your appointment.
We won’t rush you into treatment or recommend CO2 laser simply because it’s the newest service in our clinic. If we don’t believe it’s the safest or most suitable option for your skin, we’ll say so.
Still Have Questions About CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
We understand that CO2 laser may be completely new to you. Even after reading about the treatment, you’ll probably still have questions about discomfort, downtime, results and whether it’s appropriate for your skin.
Here are some of the questions we’re most commonly asked. If yours isn’t covered, please contact us or bring it along to your consultation.
Is CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing painful?
You may experience heat, prickling, stinging or discomfort during the procedure. The level of sensation varies according to the treatment area, intensity and your individual sensitivity. We’ll discuss comfort measures and explain what you’re likely to experience before treatment begins.
How much downtime will I need?
There isn’t one recovery time that applies to everyone. Downtime will depend on the area treated, treatment intensity and your individual healing response. During your consultation, we’ll give you a more personal idea of what to expect so you can plan accordingly.
Can CO2 laser completely remove acne scars?
We can’t guarantee the complete removal of acne scars. CO2 laser may soften suitable scarring and make the overall texture of your skin look smoother. The likely improvement will depend on the type, depth and extent of the scars.
How many treatments will I need?
Some concerns may respond well to one session, while deeper scarring or more established skin damage may benefit from a course. We’ll assess your skin and recommend a plan based on your concern and the results you’d realistically like to achieve.
Can I wear make-up after treatment?
You shouldn’t apply make-up until your skin has healed sufficiently and we’ve advised that it’s safe. Applying cosmetics too soon may irritate the treated area or interfere with recovery.
Is CO2 laser suitable for every skin tone?
No laser treatment is automatically suitable for every skin tone. The risk of pigmentation changes can vary, so we’ll assess your skin carefully before recommending treatment. If we don’t believe CO2 laser is appropriate, we’ll discuss why and suggest alternatives where possible.
How long will my results last?
Improvements can be long-lasting, but CO2 laser won’t stop natural ageing or protect your skin from future damage. Your skincare routine, lifestyle and sun exposure will all influence how well you maintain your results.
How much does CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing cost in Crewe?
